Then you attack their resource producing buildings. The whole point of resource gathering in RTS games basically boils down to giving you an incentive to leave your base and attack & hold points on the map. I remember playing the original C&C with no buildings and a set starting number of units. Both players would just sit in a defensive formation and wait for the other. First person to advance and attack lost. Myth is the only RTS of that type that worked. Those games where everyone cautiously skirmished for 5 minutes until making a mad dash for the hill were great. Myth multiplayer was great. If Bungie.net were still up I'd still be playing it.
There are user run servers for Myth & Myth II. Bungie opened the server code.

Most of the games that are production light in single player change a lot in multi. For example, the Relic games (Homeworld series and Dawn of War) are mostly about the combat during the campaign. You can do your building at the beginning or end of levels and just fight the rest of the time. But in multiplayer you have to build a lot more, and in scientificly precise ways to win. Ground Control is the only RTS I can think of that had no building. It could be pretty fun multiplayer, but not for very long.
Also, Laser Squad Nemesis: They want $50 a year for subscription. That's crazy. I mean, it's a lot less than a MMO but it's not like it takes a lot of work on their part to run this game. It's a play by email game, jesus! Also, you have to be subscribed to get player created maps, which is just wrong. But LSN isn't a RTS, so why are we talking about it? |
