it's not arbitrary if the players are figuring out how to win, it's somewhat akin to a math problem.

This happens all the time, and of course there's nothing wrong with it. House rules, variants, whatever you want. Even Street Fighter experts have their own little self-imposed rule-variants, as Sirlin points out. The difference is one of attitude. Are you making a serious effort to rigorously explore whatever game you're playing at whatever level you are at or are you intentionally paddling around and around in the shallow end? And if you're paddling around in the shallow end and you get sharked do you whine about it? If so you're a scrub.
