The differences between the two movies can be summed up like this: somewhere between The Terminator and T2, Cameron began to think he had a brain.
I rented the "special edition" DVD of the terminator (1) last night. First of all, I'd forgotten what a great movie it was, especially how the pace never slackens despite all the expository dialouge that has to get spat out about naked terminators and robot-sniffing dogs.
HOWEVER!!! What would a SE DVD be without infamous "deleted scenes"??? Remember the Special Edition of Aliens where we (in addition to the sentry guns scene that was good, but still removable) get a scene where we find out IT WAS NEWT'S PARENTS THAT FOUND THE ALIEN SHIP OMGWTF!!!! and a ridiculously ham-handed scene of Hudson telling Ripley that thanks to modern technology the marines were invincible against the aliens (well just whack me in the face with the symbolism 2X4, cameron)? The terminator had two such deleted scenes.
In the first, Sarah looks up Cyberdyne systems in the phonebook and then excitedly tells Reece that they should blow up the factory to prevent Skynet from being invented (to which Kyle says something vague about that not being his mission, a slapfight breaks out, then Kyle goes through the obligatory crying "I don't belong in this time" soliloqy) and a scene just after Sarah gets taken away in the ambulance where some executive in the plant reaches down and picks up the smashed terminator's CPU, then surreptitiously hands it to an assistant telling him to get this to R&D pronto followed by a slow upward pan to reveal the factory indeed belonged to cyberdyne systems.
In short: I don't know whether the terminator learning love was a later inspiration, but cameron was had the plot-breaking sequel planned from the start. |
