Or maybe I see disarming everyone else as being secondary to disarming ourselves; and that when it does happen, it will be because of their own enlightened self-interest rather than some kind of unarmed Omaha Beach.

You've got me, I do think the majority of human interests are more-or-less compatible. We're always going to have motherfuckers trying to ice skate uphill, but there's probably a better way of dealing with them than pointing guns at each other.
