What you're describing sounds like a mass spectrometer, which determines the chemical composition of a given sample by breaking it down into its component particles and then weighing them. How does it work? Magnets, science.

DNA goes into a different machine, where nucleic acids are separated by a process called capillary electrophoresis. The resulting DNA profile is usually entered into the federal database (CODIS) as a 13-digit number, where it's checked against other unidentified pieces of DNA evidence and some criminal offenders.

Both machines are capable of producing conclusive results within the span of a single musical montage, but sometimes may take so long that some dumb fuck is left holding a printout saying "hey boss we just got those results and you're not going to believe--where is he going?" because David Caruso already figured everything out on his own.
