I'm still only half way through the first season so these aren't the really really complete thoughts.
It definitely shows that this is the time BEFORE this became like the biggest show on TV besides American Idol and Lost. The ratings are probably from several million old people watching CSI whenever, along with other people who want to watch it so they don't have to have any cheesy unrealistic revelation scene happen right in the middle of a court trial, like all them Law and Order or Matlock shows, as if that's ever happened in the history of mankind.
Still, so far every case is either solved, or in the really really rare occasions (like 2 of them) there's an unsolved mystery so they can return to it in a later episode, find the real killer, but maybe they escape so they can have yet another recurring story episode. So it's still a TV show in the end, and you'd have to watch the show a lot to learn all the crazy new technology that CSI people use these days in order to find out how to get around it and commit a real life perfect murder JUST LIKE ON CSI.
Speaking of technology, one of the biggest characters on the show is whatever computer/device they use that identifies DNA and chemicals. They put a swab in a vial, put it on a rotating thing of samples, it reads the thing and prints out a sheet of paper with some chemical compound readout. They barely even get this machine in the full frame though because they just take the sheet and read it and something and that's all we get to see is some CSI person reading a sheet of paper. Hey CSI show, what the hell IS this machine? It deserves its own episode really.
Some of the shows focus on several cases at once, probably because they can't come up with enough interesting details and evidence things to fill out 42 minutes. The best episodes are probably the ones that focus on just one case, like the one where a guy is on an airplane in first class and he's dead, and there's like 10 passengers who say he just flipped out. The CSI guys recreate the crime and swab the hell out of the whole plane, placing the passengers here or there doing this, or carpet fibers or bruises on someone's hand or shoe prints here or there. Spoilers: In the end it turns out the guy had encephalitis, so his brain was swelling up, he had a fever and was indeed flipping out, pushing people around and stuff. When he went for the exit handle on the plane door, the passengers beat the shit out of him until he died. In the end they were all let go over some technicality, they couldn't prove there was intent or some stuff, I deleted the episode already so I can't go back to it. :( Anyway after that the CSI people chat it up about the situation, being on a plane vs the situation vs excessive force stuffs. It was a pretty good episode I thought.
There are a lot of inconsistent things with the first season though as the show is just starting off and trying to decide this or that about the characters still. At first there's a lot of yakkin it up about how the evidence is the most important thing O_O and you should not pre judge and such and such and of course there are storylines where they are like HM PERHAPS THIS GUY IS GUILTY but OH WE SHOULD NOT DECIDE SO SOON UNTIL THE EVIDENCE HAS SPOKEN and it turns out the suspect is innocent maybe OR NOT HIZZLE? And then like a couple episodes later, they're like I JUST FEEL THAT THIS PERSON IS GUILTY and maybe they seem really guilty, and then they are tada the end. Which is still realistic anyway. Both situations could occur, sure. Sometimes circumstance stuff makes one person appear guilty but the evidence shows they aren't, and then sometimes someone appears guilty and is all smug and creepy and then they just are.
That's not the only thing that isn't consistent at first though. The first bald CSI team leader guy in the first episode is a dick and CSI guys are like COME ON MAN THIS IS BULLSHIT (not in so many words of course), then he gets moved to homicide and becomes not a dick and is a regular character on the show and everything is fine, and the sheriff shows up in the show and he's sort of a dick as is the CSI day shift team leader. So it's like, they knew they had to have one character within law enforcement who'd be a dick but they still had to sort it out.
Also there's other recurring character shit, like the black guy may have had a gambling problem in the past or he was a casino worker or a runner for bookies, and maybe he wants to really really gamble? And then some fake crisis where he's caught on tape in a casino on the clock! But it turns out he's doing something to help some kid or something. He's still a gambler though, and a card counter. But as one of the skank brides in another episode said, "it's Vegas, it doesn't count." Anyway the other recurring plotline mostly involves the redhead chick Marg Helenburghrsdf and her vaguely scummy ex husband who is maybe a major douchebag or kind of nice but actually a douchebag again? I dunno, these early episodes are really weird like that. Also they don't have "Who Are You" as the theme song yet (not until season 2) which ended up making The Who like the official band for CSI and its spinoff shows for some reason. I think it's the really awesome Kids Are Alright movie version of "Who Are You" too and not the gayer watered down album versions. But I dunno. Anyway it inspired me to try to download the Kids Are Alright movie so I can try to get an audio rip of that version of the song. Then perhaps I can do some evidence comparison of my own and uh uh investigate. O_O
I'm probably depriving myself of a lot of good I'M ACTING REALLY REALLY INTENSE shit by not having CSI Miami with David "Abnormally Pink Weiner" Caruso. Maybe if CSI: Normal doesn't pick up a whole bunch after I finish watching season 2, I'll skip 3 through 6 and just go to Miami so I can watch APW say "so we're looking for a different kind of shark........... *puts on sunglasses* the human kind. 8(" period. |
