It seem to me that he knows that this is the same debate we've always had - it's just that a bunch of technophiles came along and declared, "COMPUTERS WILL SAVE US FROM OURSELVES!" and got all self-righteous about it. I thought his point was to figure out how to use software to manage groups considering the differences from normal human group interaction of pseudo-anonymity and the many-to-many means of communication.

The article seemed pretty grounded and to have realistic goals.

That's the thing. It sounds like he still falls into the THE INTERNET HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING group. Many-to-many communications is nothing new. It's just much much easier to do now. Using his example, if I wanted to set up a lunch with friends 100 years ago, I would just turn to my friends at the desks next to me and say (using the communications medium called "sound") "hey where do you lads want to go for bite?" But know the internet lets me do the same thing with 5 friends all around Orange County in a couple minutes. Nothing new, but new a scale.

As for the pseudo-anonymity, would you let some random guy that just walks into the PTA meeting help decide policy? Of course not. You have to establish your credentials in any new group you join. And yah, good ways to do that is article I'd like to read. He finally gets to it at the end.

Is there any real difference between a web community and the local bird watchers group? I say no.

My biggest problem is that he wants a create a superior class of users while the whole time saying that all the users should control it:

Hokie Mokie:

The people using your software, even if you own it and pay for it, have rights and will behave as if they have rights. And if you abrogate those rights, you'll hear about it very quickly.

Hokie Mokie:

So the core group needs ways to defend itself -- both in getting started and because of the effects I talked about earlier -- the core group needs to defend itself so that it can stay on its sophisticated goals and away from its basic instincts.

Why is the Core Group more important? Who gets to be the Core Group? What if 95% of the site disagrees with the Core Group? etc... etc... etc...

I did really like the part about the three reasons groups exist.
