(You know what's funny? If they had simply cribbed the hacking minigame from Shadowrun, modernized the graphics, and replaced the purchase of better decks and programs with stuff/buy/make along the way, it could have worked really well, in a way that System Shocks' system never pulled off. Pity.)
Had more than 2 enemies attack you at the same time. OH NO! IT WOULD BE LIEK QUAKE THEN! SS1 gave you plenty of weapons (all of which you could use) and plenty of baddies, and it was a better game for it. It would be one thing if the one or two enemies you ran into in SS2 were challenging, but they weren't. Most of the time the monster you faced halfway through the game was the same hybrid/midwife you faced near the beginning. It was like Arcanum's random encounters that never scaled up; what the fuck is the point?
Useful upgrades- Those O/S station upgrades were a joke. I also remember about 90% of the psi powers being useless. Heal, cryo-attack, shield, anti-entropy, and the recharge one were the only ones I ever used.
I think the respawning could have worked if they had the monsters respawn in areas you weren't in. Have them respawn on the other side of the deck. That way you wouldnt have the constant empty corridors once you cleared out a deck that SS1 had, and you wouldn't have the annoying factor of enemies popping through doors you just came through, or even worse teleporting in right before your eyes.
Deus Ex pulled off the RPG skill thing in a FPS much MUCH better than SS2. You could still do anything, you just wouldnt be very good at it. Instead of saying "a pistol? what's that????", you just wouldnt be very accurate with it and reload slowly. The only complaint I had was that they made weapons more innaccurate if you werent skilled in them, yet also made you do less damage when you did manage to hit. That seemed a bit arbitrary.
Are we really having a discussion on whether or not SS2 is any good? This game blows after the first few hours of OOKY SKARY FUNTIME wears off. I really wanted to like the game, too, nothing would please me more than a good scary game. SS2 was only 1 of those 3, and barely. I gave up on the game pretty early on, too, at the point where you're somewhere in the middle of the WACKY NESTED SUBROUTINE elevator quest, trying to do whatever with those radioactive hallways, and the spawning shotgun-weilding dipshits come every five seconds, so you can't set yourself to take out the 3 or 4 turrets before another one blasts you in the back of the fucking head. FABIO has brought this up, and it should really end any discussion on the relative merit of SS2:
YOUR CHARACTER IS IN THE MILITARY BUT (in all possibility) CAN'T FIRE A HANDGUN, A FUTURISTIC ONE THAT BREAKS AFTER A FEW SHOTS.
Making your game character a complete dipshit isn't "intelligent" gaming, it's fucking stupid. It's Not Like Quake because you only fight one enemy at a time, usually with a fucking wrench? Great. It would have worked if part of teh challenge was killing any one enemy, if they were interesting and tough. But they were horrbily generic, and the respawn is nearly unforgivable. I know the point was to keep you on your toes constantly, but the flipside to that attempt is to just annoy the gamer. HAHA ARRRR HERE I AM AGAIN! IN THE HALLWAY YOU JUST CLEARED! ISN'T THAT SCARY? YOU TRIED TO READ A DATLOG AND I INTERRUPTED YOU BEFORE YOU COULD EVEN READ IT! BOO! HURRY UP AND KILL ME SO ANOTHER ME CAN SPAWN IN! I'LL DROP A JAMMED SHOTGUN TOO! BETTER USE THE WRENCH OR YOU'LL RUN OUT AMMO IF YOUR GUN DOESN'T BREAK FIRST! SS2 tried, sure, but it failed. Like plenty of games, it tried. But. It. Failed. Who the hell wants to play a game like that? Would anyone like to play Daikatana and Trespasser, two other more notorious examples? Does this make sense now?
