I have only been playing a week and already got down to lvl 13 of the dungeon, showing that the game is not impossible. so shut up and play your diablo

Indeed. With a little bit of brains and actual interest for this kind of games (no, it's really not comparable to diablo and if you like diablo you might very well dislike nethack - I love nethack and I found diablo to be a bit of fun for a couple days, but then got bored of it) you can easy play to the bottom of gnomish mines, find the stone of luck, get drunk on gnomish wine cellar, get back up to level 2 or 3 and continue with normal levels (the gnomish mines is just a trip very recommended to take in between) when a lot more experienced and better equipped to further and further. The fact that when you die you really do die does add an element missing from a shitload of games with the major exception beeing - guess what? - rogue-like games.

Most claims about why nethack sucks are not even true here, btw. Example: Your pet avoids walking on cursed items, you should never wear or wield an item that is identified of beeing cursed - I rarely buy scroll of identification at all, but there is a good way to find it in a shop that sells scrolls. Want a shitload of shopping? Play mall tycoon, in nethack shops are not at all the main way of getting equipment and other stuff - if you can't imagine a game where most objects are reached without ever walking into a shop then maybe you need some imagination expansion. You can find a level full of shops in gnomish mines, btw... I think it's usually 5th or 6th level in gnomish mines. From there I rarely buy anything else than a couple lamps for dark levels and a pick-axe (if I dont have one) for the bottom floor of gnomish mines...

Nethack is an awesome game for people who like to find new stuff, ideas, revelations, etc. and are not bothered about lack of graphics (personally I enjoy the look of nethack - and I dont understand the comment about beeing able to play nethack with pencil and paper. Yes you can (kind of) if by pencil and paper you mean a guide book for AD&D, pencil, dices and character sheets... ;) Actually I could just as well claim that you can play Diablo, Unreal or whateverthefuckyouwant with pen and paper - you just have to be a good enough drawer. LOL, what a load of bollocks.

Most of the comments about what's wrong with nethack are clear examples of talking without knowing a jacks shit about nethack - some of them seem to reveal bad case of lack of imagination (many people are not used to think what kind of things could be possible to do to achieve different things in computer games because most games do not offer such wide variety of possible ways to do things and most games seem to simply reveal the possible ways to the player right away so you never really have to ponder about how to go on with other kinds of cRPG's...

That's just my 2 cents - nethack is not for everyone, but it's a shame that people who didn't find it to be a game of theirs have to be lame enough to write flame writings about a game that they don't have a slightest idea of how to play it - which is clearly the case with the ones who whine about dying all the time on lower levels. It is actually quite rare to die without getting at least to gnomish mines shopping level if you don't take risks. Many of us however deliberately want to take those chances - there's always the next game to play if you blow it.
