Nethack provides a high score list for a reason, and the high score list is really the whole point of the game.
an example of a too-hard-to-save feature being appealing to dorks was given earlier, you've provided another, even gayer one. Tricking children into pumping more quarters into a machine that has the same blinking dots as every other game is why high scores were made. Geez, comparing your game to 20 year old dinosaurs and then failing, i feel for you.
Tetris, Pac-Man, Asteroids, or any score-driven game wouldn't be fun if you could quicksave at any time and keep playing for hours without it getting too hard to play. Neither would Nethack.
they would also not be fun if they were frustrating and boring like another game i know but will not mention because i'm going to great pains to be sarcastic.
People will be less likely to argue with you if you just precede every sentance with "i know its gay BUT" when talking about Nethack.
