Damocles is also in total love with FF8. And, while I cant render judgement since I have not played the game, enjoyed Xenosaga, which I believe you hated and ranked only slightly above Wild Arms 3?
To say that Chrono Cross is just as good as any other 32 bit RPG is ridiculous. It's easily the worst square RPG I've ever played (never tried the Saga games though). The only saving graces are the good music (although it has THE most annoying battle music, and you get to spend 70% of the game listening to it loop constantly), no random encounters, and the 100% success rate at running away from any battle you do not wish to fight (including bosses).
The characters are horrible though, they have ZERO personality since they all say the same damn thing at every point in the game no matter who's in your party. This game runs a close second to the first Final Fantasy for least defined characters in a square game. The plot is horribly, horribly convoluted. Xenogears was fucking crystal clear compared to CC. You're going to be confused by the plot 1/3'rd the way into it, and totally clueless after that, not that you really care what's happening to you expressionless characters. Even without the plot to confuse you, it's hard enough to keep track of the differences between the two alternate worlds because they're so damn arbitrary and cosmetic. Fuck the person who called this a chrono trigger sequel. It's like they made a completely unrelated game then at the last minute dropped in a few names in the dialogue and stuck children's crayon drawings of Chrono as background art on some building's wall I AM NOT EXAGGERATING THIS SHIT. This game is as much a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger as any of the FF games are direct sequels to each other (exluding FX-2). Also, no getting an entire world of various high tech time periods; you're stuck on 5-6 tiny carribean island (which you can see all at once from the tiny world map) and apparently the entire game takes place in the 17th century. Did I already mention the totally ph4t canoe you get to use as your sole vehicle the entire game? Yes? Good, because it's twice as retarded as you're imagining it.
And I cannot stress enough the WORST ENDING EVER. Honestly, FF1's couple paragraphs of text was better than this shit, simply because the "good" ending (utterly fucking impossible to get without a FAQ, and even then maddeningly difficult) is simply a couple paragraphs of text, only it's preachy save the planet crap (with overt mentions of sperm I AM NOT EXAGGERATING THIS SHIT) so it's automatically worse.
