Horrible horrible game. I thought the elemental and combat system was quirky fun at first, but the management of switching them over to different party members quickly becomes very time consuming and tedious. A few points for no random encounters, but that's it. The story starts out pretty bland and gets worse from there. About one-third of the way into the game it goes into the "shitty attempt at non-linearity and no plot" mode Damocles described. The game dissolves into a Pokemon game where you're supposed to give a shit about collecting all the 40 characters (pretty damn close to that number) even though you'll only need 2 in addition to the main character. Once non-linear mode is reached, all characters lose any personality and will say the exact same lines during the game regardless of which two you have in your party, the only difference being some of them will speak in kRaZy accents. The late game also has THE single most fucking convoluted plot and exposition I've ever seen in a game; Metal Gear Solid 2 is the only contender that comes close to matching it, and although MGS2 was more retarded, Chrono Cross wins out for sheer "WTF is going on?" obscurity. The pacing is so fucking horrible that they're reduced to trying to explain everything to you in 20 paragraphs of text offered by an NPC right before the final boss fight. The final boss fight is also gay. You can either have an unbelievably easy time killing him (he never does anyhting more than cast CC's equivilant to ICE3, FIRE3, etc) and get the worst non-ending ever (credits roll while cutscenes you've already seen in the game play in a black and white postage stamp sized window) or go for the "good" ending which is utterly fucking impossible to stumble on without a FAQ, and even then you'll be throwing your controller in frustration trying to impliment it.
They also take all the bad from Chronot Trigger and none of the good
CT: Time travel with different settings that affect each other along the timeline
CC: Two alternate universes with nearly cosmetic differences. Almost all the differences involve one key item being in one world and not the other, with no reason or clues given as to why that item is in one particular world over the other.
CT: Cool Sci-Fi theme. Cool gadgets. Flying around in the Epoch.
CC: Low tech carribean theme(???). Travelling around islands on a tiny overworld map in a friggin canoe.
CT: Mute main character that might have been cute at the time (I didnt like it though)
CC: Mute main character that gets downright annoying.
CT: Chrono Trigger was a great game!
CC: Chronot Tigger was a great game! This is an official sequel to CT, something Square's never done before! There are virtually no connections to the original CT aside from the occaisional name dropping.
If you hated the pro-environment theme of FF7, then stay the hell away from CC. Basically the message for the entire game is "humans do nothing but screw up nature, and will be the death of the planet".
I havent played any of the Saga games, so that might be a factor, but I can say that CC was easily the worst Square game I've ever played. I've played Secret of Evermore, I've played Mystic Quest, I played Xenogears, I've played Parasite Eve 2, none of them beat out Chrono Cross in terms of suckage.
