Sure the world of ruin was a dissapointment, but so was pretty much everything past hour 6 in FFVII, the entire FFVIII experience ("trying" doesnt cut it. System Shock 2 "tried"), and from what I hear the end of FF9.
A disappointment? It was a trainwreck. There was nothing in FF7 or FF8 that sucked half as bad as wandering around that blasted landscape, collecting characters like pokemon. Crossdressing in FF7 wasn't as gay.
(FF8 improved once drawing ceased being necessary. Lame-ass whining about junctioning and non-SD character design notwithstanding.)

Here's the thing though, I totally agree that loving FF2 (4, whatever) is pure nostaltia. If I try going back to that I just cant do it, it's boring and unpolished by today's standards. However I can keep going back to playing FF6 at any time and still love it. That's something FF7-10 cannot do (well, I can play the midgard part of FF7 repeatedly). That counts for something.
Maybe, but c'mon...that's pretty much just opinion talking, and nostalgia doesn't necessarily have to go away when you actually play the thing. It could colour your play experience. I didn't really start getting annoyed with FF6 until my second play-through... I was a big apologist for the game until I played through the game and realized that all the bitching I had heard about the WoR, the broken esper system, the useless bonus characters, the weak-ass character development (nonexistent in many cases), the stank-ass ending (even FF7's was superior)... all of it was true. Especially after having played Chrono Trigger, a game that did everything FF6 tried to do and did it right.
Personally, I prefer FF2. But I prefer any given Phantasy Star over the lot of them. Including the first, which actually ages REALLY well, better than any other 8-bit game that wasn't made by Nintendo.

Here's my little console RPG craving that hasnt been satisfied since FF6, if you're going to put a ton of people in the party, can you at least let us use most of them? Pretty gay to be running around with a group of 8-12, yet when a battle comes along, it's only 3 or 4 of you doing the fighting. I loved those parts in FF6 where you had multiple parties you switched between. Unless you were a total power gamer, in FF7-9 everyone just stuck with the same members and ignored the rest, leaving them completely atrophied as the game went on (that's one thing I loved about Chrono Trigger, all the characters leveled up together and no one became obsolete). FF10 came close to this, but still no multiple parties at once. How about letting ALL of my party battle at once? Can the processor not handle a few more combatants going through the idle combat stance animation? Especially retarded is strategy RPGs having you venture around with a group of 20, yet limited you to about 5 per battle. There is no excuse not to let you use everyone. If you can handle chess, you can handle a fight with a dozen or two combatants.
Best system for this, for me, was the Suikoden games. The smaller parties were part of a larger group that spent their time training and defending the castle, and levelling up newbies was really, really easy, to the point of having them in a fight or two and then getting up to speed. Also has the speediest combat system ever, at least 1 and 2. Great games.
BTW, FF8 has those "switching" parts, but there was no need to build up more than three junction/spell sets... just swap them around when characters switch. So it didn't have that problem. FF6's multiple party parts were REALLY bad for that "unlevelled' problem you mention, especially at the end with the Goddesses, so I don't know why you're lauding it. |
