I welcome that change. DW3 felt less like a massive all out battle between armies and more like mobs of soldiers mulling around until they just happen to wander into an enemy mob. Upon which they'd both circle each other for hours and occaisonally land a blow or two. Your character was such a deciding force because you were the only one that would GO TO WHERE YOU ARE NEEDED.
Hell yes, better AI will improve it quite a bit. At least with DW3:XL, the enemies are fairly agressive on Very Hard mode, but the major difficulty still lies in the monstrous hit points that enemies get more than anything else, so that just means it now takes ten minutes of using your Charge 5 combos to kill them instead of five minutes.
Other minor issues I'd like to see addressed:
Grace periods removed- That annoying aspect of videogames where after taking a hit, the character/enemy is immune to attack for awhile, usually in the form of invinsibility for a few seconds (signalled by rapidly blinking) or getting knocked down and being unable to attack them until they decide to get up (HE'S PRONE AND DEFENSELESS FINISH THE MOTHERFUCKER!).
This will never ever change because it's an immutable law of video game making. I agree that it sucks, for what that's worth. In DW4 it's still going to take place in the form of people lying on the ground after they get hit, yet nothing you do can harm them until they stand up. GAY.
Better juggling- Can we have something faster and flashier than DW3's repeating uppercut swing over and over and over?
Ah, now here Koei has apparently answered your prayers. You can no longer do infinite juggles - when you do a Charge-5 attack it still knocks them up in the air, and you can still follow up with another Charge-5 if you want, but the problem is on the followup combo, only your square attacks will hit - the triangle attack (the actual uppercut) will come out to late to hit the enemy and they'll hit the ground, ending your combo. However, you can follow up with most other Charge attacks and have every hit of those connect normally, or you can use your musou. Those will still end the combo but at least you'll have at least finished it in style.
Oddly, in DW3:XL, they instituted a combo system that rewarded you with bonus points (which led to getting better weapons/items at the end of a mission) when you used a variety of Charge attacks in your combos. This gave you a good incentive to try for a Charge 3/Charge 2/Charge 5/Charge 6/Musou, even if that wasn't as deadly as just using Charge 5 all day. Yet this combo-point rewards system has been taken out in DW4. Or maybe, since they were developing both games concurrently, they'd already written most of DW4's code and couldn't cram this in? I don't know.
Now here's something about DW4 that apparently will probably suck huge salty gangrene-ridden ballsacks:
THERE IS ONLY ENGLISH VOICE ACTING AND NOTHING ELSE.
ALSO: EVERYONE HAS A GODDAMN LIMEY ACCENT.
For the life of me I cannot believe or justify that. And yes, apparently how the way the Japanese version is set up - English (goddamn terrorist-and-bad-rock-group-lovin' British, to be specific) voice acting only. At least a whole lot of Japanese players are bitter about the voice acting.
For those who never played them, the English voice acting of both DW3 and Dynasty Tactics is bad. Awful. HORRIBLE. UN-MOTHERFISTFUCKING-LISTENABLE. It's so bad that it skyrockets past "just plain bad", transcends "bad in a humorous, poor-dubbing foreign movie sense", and concludes its quadruple-somersault kung fu leap to land in "SET BAD VOICEWORK ENGINES FOR WARP 9, ENSIGN FAGSTER" territory. It's the most woodenly-expressed anti-emotional crap I think I've EVER HEARD.
No joke, I'm talking "Darkseed 2, Might & Magic 7, Stonekeep, Onifuckingmusha 2" bad here, people. Except that it's arguably even worse than any of those. Check that - Dynasty Tactics is CLEARLY worse than any of those. And that's only judging the pure quality of the voicework - I can't even think about the blatant mispronounciations that even a non-Chinese speaking moron like myself knows are wrong. (Cao Cao != COW COW, for fuck's sake.)
Have you ever attended a conference for your company and had to sit through a droning speech by the LAN administrator about the upgrades they're going to make to the virus detection software or whatever, or listen to the mailroom supervisor rattling off eighty thousand statistics about how many pieces of mail the fancy new machine opened automatically? That's exactly the sort of atmosphere that Koei's English voice actors lent to the world of Dynasty Warriors 3, which last time I checked was a game about a motherfucking WAR where everyone knows badass kung fu and is beating the crap out of everyone else while ROCKING THE FUCK OUT to hair-metal music. What the hell, so now Koei's trying to take their bad voice acting efforts to new heights / lows by having everyone voiced by poncy fags with names like Bentley and Blair?! (Okay, I promise that I'll stop Britain-baiting now.)
Why? Why why WHY WHY WHY?!
At least I can't possibly tell if the Japanese voicework of DW3 was bad. (And actually, I thought it was really, legitimately great in some cases - Xiahou Dun's Japanese voice epitomized BAD... ASS... MOTHERFUCKER more than anyone in any game ever.) For the life of me I can't understand the decision to remove the Japanese voicework.
BILE... LEVELS... RISING...
REACHING... CRITICAL... MASS...
Well, at least I tried to rant about it. But I'm such a DW fanboy that I can't bring myself to *really* care much about this. I can say that the moment I hear Xiahou Dun cry out "What ho, good sir! Would you care for a duel? Jolly good! I'll have the butler prepare some crumpets and tea for after we've finished" I'm going to punch the fucking mute button with a sledgehammer.
(Alright, I'll really really really stop unfairly maligning British people here, if only because I'm now at the end of my post.) |
