Just for the record, because there's been some bullshit flying over this point, Saddam didn't kick the inspectors out. The head of the Inspection team pulled them out. Not that Saddam isn't a very bad man

Yeah, I thought it was actually the Clinton administration that told them to give it up. I'm not clear on the details, but I wasn't aware that anyone actually believed that Saddam kicked them out. That's funny.

Um... last I checked Qt3 was a bunch of game reviewer whores and megalomanaiacal game developers whose grip on reality is tenuous at best, but let's forget that at the moment.

What good would it do the US to have complete control of Iraqi oil? I dunno. The problem is, you seem to be assuming that George Jr. is stirring up this shitstorm on behalf of America's SUV-driving Soccer moms instead of the companies who would directly profit. Do you really think this "give peace a chance" PR from the oil companies is serious?

No, I agree, they are a bunch of game reviewers. My trust may be horribly misplaced. We'll see. But I'm not sure what lead you to believe that I was saying the bit about Jr. doing all of this to help the SUV driving public or whatever. My impression (and Zseni, I'll look for some corroborating evidence) was that the oil companies have assloads of valuable contracts that they can develop when and if the sanctions are lifted. Those contracts may be worthless in a Saddam-less Iraq. Russia in particular just signed all kinds of deals with Iraq. So the oil companies want Saddam in power and the sanctions lifted, and the prospect of the US going in and fucking everything up is very worrisome. The oil cabal in the White House in this scenario is actually going against their lobby, if you can believe that.
