Some crap I found by laudablepuss 01/31/2003, 8:19pm PST

For my part, I can't believe one of your justifications for peace (or proofs of an unjust war or whatever) is that Saddam's been thumbing his nose at the UN for 10 years, so jumping on him now is hypocrtitical or something. Isn't this like saying that driving 100 MPH is dangerous, unless you've been doing it for years, then it suddenly becomes less dangerous? Some people, including myself, were very very annoyed when the weapons inspectors left and very upset that this jackass was given such a long time to get his armaments programs back on track. One of my main complaints about the Clinton administration.

No, it's like spending ten years threatening a little kid get with violence for jerking off in public, but you don't do anything he keeps jerking, and then all of a sudden saying "okay NOW STOP THAT OR YOU GET BEAT DOWN." Despite what you're going to want to say, dude, the comparison is alarmingly valid: Saddam has done exactly as much as we have let him get away with. The question remains - what's happened that's so special we have to make good on all our threats now, and why, after ten years, is he going to buy that it's any more than just more threats until the moment the bombs hit?

Well, call this the most optimistic answer: what happened is that we succesfully destroyed the baddies in Afghanistan following 9-11, and now we're scanning our war room map for the next target on the hit parade. What's wrong with that notion? There are literally DOZENS of reasons why Saddam should be dealt with, the fact that it's happening later rather than sooner (from the perspective of 1991) is immaterial. Isn't it? And doesn't the fact that beating the mother-loving shit out of Iraq is perfectly legal since they are in no uncertain terms in violation of many UN resolutions imposed as part of the peace treaty that got our forces out of their faces in the first place enough of a reason to put them higher on the list of assholes to take down than, say, North Korea?

Also, according to some sources, he's closer now to getting a nuke (actually, enough enriched uranium to fill his supposedly fully functional uranium-less nuke) than he has been since before 1991, when he, again supposedly, was pretty close already.

There are currently how many soldiers mobilized and building up in the Middle East now? That might indicate to him that this is more than a bluff.

As for ties or the lack thereof to terrorist organizations, the only equation I see is:

Lunatic + Nuclear weapons + Terrorists groups merely existing nearby = all kinds of potential for mayhem. Let's give Saddam some nukes, then see if he can keep them under control! It'll be a great game of wait and cringe.

Iron filings + magnet + superglue = all kinds of potential architecture.

But very little actual architecture.

VERY MENTAL.

For the record: I agree we need to go after Saudi Fucking Arabia. And North Korea. The need for action elsewhere has no bearing whatsoever on the need for action in Iraq.

For the record: christ, nuke Iraq all you want America, blow the whole fuckin' middle east sky high, but don't tell me you're doing it for anything but the oil. North Korea - aside from being an empty threat - has no resources worth procuring, so we aren't arsing ourselves about procuring them.

I happen to believe that North Korea is a MUCH tougher nut to crack and that alone is the reason we aren't jumping down their throats with both feet. And even if it's not the only reason, it's certainly reason enough. The fact that they almost CERTAINLY have at least one functional nuclear device is another really big reason to be careful with those shitheads.

Also, apparently oil companies all over the world are against the war in Iraq. And there's some question (again at Qt3) about how much good it'd do to have the US in complete control of Iraqi oil. I have to admit that I can't find evidence of this on my own yet (what search phrase should I try? "oil companies against war" brings up countless NO BLOOD FOR OIL pages), but I trust the sources at Qt3.

Lemme know if you do find anything, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Well, I found all kinds of stuff relating to foreign oil companies being worried they'd get the shaft royally if we replaced Saddam. The idea is that we'd then give all those lucrative contracts to American comapanies. Also, some stories say that we'd make sure our companies got preference as a way to pay for the reconstruction of the country. And one article mentions the possibility of Russia preemtively staging a coup just to make sure they don't get screwed. However, I did find one article so far that supports the theory I mentioned in my response to Mischief Maker. I didn't finish reading it yet (sorry, I'm running late as it is) but the basic premise is that we've been cultivating other areas as alternatives to mideast oil and suddenly taking over Iraqi and potentially lowering world oil prices would hurt our other interests. Or something.

Anyway, I promise to do more research on this. Just not right now. Here, enjoy another article I haven't had time to read yet from 1998 regarding Saddam's nuke program. In fact, could you do all the research for my argument for me? That'd be great. :D
