It seems like a possibility, I suppose: there could be aliens who feel that we are important enough to observe...yet scary enough to not want to make much contact. Somehow it seems a tad egotistical to 1. want to be the person who is cool and spots the UFO!, 2. believe that we are watched closely by an alien species because we are just that special. I suppose there could be secret power plants in third world countries full of bipeds with knees that bend backwards, but I'm going to tuck that into the "unlikely" folder along with God and winning the lottery.

Anal probe aside, the UFO abduction stories tend to be on a more individual basis. Weeping Virgin Mary can be faked much more easily and is often observed by fanatical crowds. When I was a small kid taking a vacation near some mountains in Bulgaria, I thought I saw a UFO. I don't know what it was. To my seven year old eyes it was some hovering object with cliche yellow and red lights. It might have been nothing. Furthermore, I do agree that it is egotistical to think we are being watched, but if what else could they do? It's all that scientists do. Watch shit.
