John Carmack makes games that John Carmack wants to make. He probably doesn't even give a shit about the end product as long as his engine displays light a certain way.
I would love to learn more about the hiring process for whoever is responsible for what those asshole characters in Rage say. Doesn't Carmack have any pride any more? Valve was nothing, just another FPS company, and then they hired the people from Old Man Murray and they make the funniest and most entertaining games in the world now. Why can't Carmack hire, fuck, someone like Ryan North and Jerry Whorebach? And wrestle the #1 position back from Gabe Newell.
Ego. The same reason Blizzard still insists on letting their head programmers write stories. The same reason 99% of student and indie films are unwatchable. No so much of amateurishness, but that the one who could afford to finance it is almost never the creative one, but it's his money and dammit he's going to make what he wrote. |
