The learning curve for SLSK is pretty monstrous, but I've gotten over 200 gigs from there. It has everything I want, not just whatever is posted on certain torrent sites.
Huh? The learning curve? You'd think Soulseek was the software for air traffic control the way you're both talking about it. Two things to remember:
1. Multiple near-simultaneous searches will often lead to different sets of results, so if everything appears queued, keep running the search a few times.
2. Sort results by max speed and download by directory, aim to download stuff that isn't greyed out (i.e you won't be stuck in a queue) -- this is where point #1 comes in handy, since you'll often find that a second search will return the album you want with no one in line.
If you're looking for something really obscure, then ignore the above, and just download the only search result that comes back.
With that I've never had any issues -- Soulseek was and is the replacement Audiogalaxy, and only now that better BT music sites have sprung up have I found myself using it much less. It's still got a lot better arcana than even the most arcane BT site, I think.
I don't have trouble with the software. It's a glorified version of WinMX, which I've been using for years. I don't have trouble with the notion of queueing. I've waited out queues of 200 or 300 or even 1000 before. No, what I have trouble with is finding the albums I want to find, coupled with the way that slsk makes just browsing around a huge chore.
I want you guys to find me the following albums on Soulseek. They are not obscure. The first one is REALLY out of print, so I'll accept even a Best Of compilation in its place. Good luck, soldiers.
Sam & Dave: Double Dynamite
The Bee Gees: Odessa
Trevor Pinnock/The English Concert: [Arcangelo Corelli] Trio Sonatas
Rose Royce albums that aren't "Best Of" compilations.
