Monitor stuff for future reference by Ice Cream Jonsey 06/24/2008, 5:14pm PDT
I hear you on the monitor. Let me write this up in case you need it later. (Keeping in mind that you would first want to adjust a pot on the monitor to increase brightness - it's unlikely that it got jostled dark, but it's easy to check this, so.)

The typical thing people say, when you have a monitor problem, is to give it a "cap kit." This is replacing the capacitors on the monitor's board. You'd find out the kind of monitor and go to the Real Bob Roberts's site and get a pre-put-together cap kit for that monitor.

This has always sounded like an enormous pain in the ass to me. I don't doubt that I could match up the right capacitors, unsolder the old ones, put the new ones on, blah blah blah. But it does nothing for screen burn, and frankly, new monitors are cheap enough that I'd rather remove an old monitor, sell it, and drop a new one in. (That being said, cap kits are done all the time by competent techs, and it is really no big deal for them. I am not one of them.)

There is a fairly cheap monitor that lots of people like, called the Happ Vision Pro shelf-mount monitor. Happ constantly puts the thing on sale for $135 + shipping. I just looked, and it's $126 right now - that's good! The sale is for two months at a time. Perfect! The bad thing is that it is just as frequently not on sale, and it's like $50. A complete ripoff from those motherfuckers at Happ at $185 when, for six months, it's much less.

They'll be on sale till the end of July. They are 19" standard resolution monitors. You can mount them either vertically or horizontally. You'll want to keep the metal chassis that currently surrounds your old monitor, as you may have to bolt the monitor to that, and that metal chassis to the cabinet.

I have purchased two - one for a Ms. Pac (works great) and one for a JAMMA 48-in-1 machine (again, works great). I knew absolutely nothing before I installed the one for Pac.

Badlands requires a standard resolution monitor, according to KLOV.com and a Usenet post. (KLOV isn't always correct, so it's good to confirm.) If you have any burn on the monitor right now, I'd recommend getting a new one. Before you do, I will ask people if there are any known problems with the Vision Pro and the game, just to be safe, as you don't want that beast around (the monitor) with some incompatibility there. It's been my experience that they spray the Vision Pro down with catnip before shipping, which adds additional challenges if you live with five cats. But yeah, since Badlands is JAMMA, I am very confident that it would be fine.

One thing to remember, regarding monitor swapping, is the deal with the thing's anode cap. It is possible to kill oneself, or at least get a giant shock, when monkeying around with a monitor. A lot of electricity flows through it, and, hahaha, it doesn't become completely inert when the monitor is turned off. Here is one of the many sites I went to, to read about it first. I have found that it is always good to get two sources when it comes to arcade game repair - not because people lie, but because arcade techs eventually get so good at what they do that they omit stuff that newbies need. You don't need a probe to do it - you can discharge the thing using a screwdriver, wire, alligator clips and the chassis's ground. I did it that way and didn't even get a "crack" when it discharged. In the future I am going to get a probe just for peace of mind.
