There were no dragons in the original Baldur's Gate. So dragons are not a requirement.

The Red Dragon fight in Baldur's Gate II was one of the best battles, from a tactical perspective, in any video game. (From a video game tactics perspective: I am under no illusion that anything I did against Firkraag resembles tactics in real life combat.) By the time you got a chance to fight him you had dozens of spells available, six characters in one of the many classes BG2 introduced and and all sorts of magic weapons and items. They took their time to introduce dragon fights into the BG games and nailed it when they did.
