Saw it tonight; it's hard to really make a fair comparison between Burton's and Nolan's versions. It would be like comparing The Terminator with Nightmare On Elm Street... they're both horror movies but one is neat-looking but campy and the other is grimy but thrilling.
another way of looking at it is that they are really easy to compare. Because they're both fucking Batman movies. and i guess you've walked by same terribly misplaced copy of The Terminator in the horror section of your family video store so often that it doesn't register anymore how wrong that is. Myself, i'd put the movie with explosions, gunfights and killer robots in a different genre than the one about monsters that kill children in their sleep.
-wicked awesome Batmobile
i like how its targeting system was so antiquitated that he had to look along the sites of his batmissles before shooting them at stuff.
-Christian Bale was maybe the best Batman. I liked Michael Keaton, too. But Bale was a hell of a lot more believable as an asskicker.
It also made a big difference when one actor actually tried the billionaire playboy schtick. Keaton ran around in a costume all night, then decided a perfect cover for that would be to act crazy and weird as Bruce Wayne.
-if the animated series has anything to do with the comic book, they did a good job of portraying what an ineffectual wussy villain Scarecrow was.
no shit, jesus. If i, in my supervillain debut, was soundly defeated by a girl wielding a tazer, i would put some thought into whether i was high enough on the bad guy food chain to even be on Batman's radar. probably should have started out with Batgirl or something. Also, shooting gas at people instead of bullets is pretty gay.
Negatives:
-as mentioned, the editor went to the Jason Bourne School of Broadcast Arts. During the fights and chases there was a cut probably every 12 frames. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? For all I know the way Batman takes on 7 guys at once is, he jumbles around their perspective so often that every time they throw a punch it comes flying back in their own faces.
Yes. When they first started doing that shit i was like gee, they shoulda waited until AFTER the first dramatic shot of batman onscreen before they had a fight scene. Then he was all "I'm Batman" and they kept doing it :(
Sin City, another comic movie, had lots of running across rooftops. What it didn't have was its hero flying through the air like a retard. I'm not sure why Nolan thought he should bring his own artistic interpretation to hanglider Batman. It was just as stupid looking in 89 (or maybe the sequel) as it is now. |
