May 15, 2004:
On Monday, I moved into Wetmore Hall Residence/University of Toronto. I've never been away from home; this is my first time being away from home. By Tuesday, I was freaking out and wondering what I just got myself into and almost broke out in tears while having dinner with my best friend in Chinatown. Why did I give up the amenities of home? Was I novelty seeking? The SHOCK hit me when I was trying to figure things out like budgeting, what to eat, social life and school which starts next week.
Nearing the end of my first week living on my own, I'm learning a lot of things. It had to happen sometime; however, for a brief moment, I experienced the agony of reform. At least, I've been able to spend more time with friends who live in the neighborhood.
My room isn't that bad, I have: air conditioning, telephone & voice mail, a fridge, lots of closet space, drawers under my bed , a fridge with freezer, sitting chair and tilting chair. Roughly, the room is 18 feet long 11 feet wide. I lucked out because I got a bigger room because the building is kind of shaped like the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C.; the curves of the building make my room more spacious than other resident's rooms.
Naturally, people living in the same quarters will tend to form groups of their own (e.g. cliques). Well, I've kind of started my own! At breakfast yesterday, 6 people came and sat with me! Its maybe the result of me being uber friendly 24/7. I'm an unofficial ringleader in that I'm recruiting people who like to party. Our clique might not be too large, because they're too many nerds here (which is good, cause they don't make a lot of noise) but its bad for partying. Last night, I left two large empty bottles of Corona in the hallway to send a subtle message of things to come this summer. Furthermore, Neil (a floormate) and I had a beerfest before going out to the Dance Cave last night. My door was open, music playing and we were talking loudly (to spite the nerds) who keep their doors closed on a Friday night.
They give us free breakfast daily which ends at 10AM. Its good because it gets me up in time to do something useful with my day, and makes it easy to fall asleep at night. I load up and usually eat two full plates of: eggs, bacon/sausage, hash browns, OJ, maybe a crossiant too. Its probably a 10 000 calorie breakfast, but I notice it keeps me from snacking throughout the day. I usually have a late lunch that I make myself (baguette, cheese, tomatoes, sliced meats, butter). Buying food is cheap (also fun) because I go to Kensington Market (its like a flea market) where I buy food. For dinner, I go out and by something.
The best feeling this week was: having a cup of tea right after my shower, dressed in my bathrobe, enjoying the air conditioning and laying on my bed to rest after an exhausting day.
Don't get me wrong, I like guys but its always so much more fun to befriend and hang out with girls. I befriended two girls @ Dance Cave last night (who I semi-met on the street on Wednesday). Beth and Christina both gave me their phone numbers last night. I'm looking forward to having female guests over 24/7! It was different when I was at home at home. Its not what you think, although that wouldn't be bad too! No, I'm not like that. In fact, if a girl is in my room, I'd think it'd be inappropriate for the door to be closed!

Last night, I receieved the most splendid surprise! Michelle called my cell phone and extended warm greetings of friendship! She also asked how I was doing living on my own and was (like many others) also under the impression that I was already living on my own.
She called all the way from the other side of North America (British Columbia)! I don't think I've ever received a long distance call before. It feels so special!
If Michelle, on the West Coast can call me, perhaps others in residing in the same local will also call! Ashley, you're the exception, b/c we have had a rather creative dialogue that one time!
May 22, 2004, #2:
I'm not really responsible; after all, others are involved. On Thursday, I bought a 24 case of beer and had a friend over to drink in my room. It ended up moving to the Common Room. Drinking is only allowed in dorm rooms and not in the hall or Common Room. There's this young student (18 who's underage) who I also dispensed beer too. Soon, people were stumbling and starting to also smoke in the Common Room. After 11PM, there's a security patrol that we were on alert for; when the patrol came, they only opened the door and didn't even look inside or smell the smoke.
By Friday night, a floormate bought a 24 case of beer and the revelry took place all over again. The porter (front desk) knew something was up, because people are going out for smokes and holding cups, not to mention seeing me come in earlier with beer and a girl who happened to be carrying a case of beer for our pre-clubbing fest. By the time we were ready to leave, our mob of eight was singing in the hall while walking with beer bottles in our pockets for drinking during our walk to Dance Cave.
The Cave was good like usual. I also played social architect and introduced boys/girls to each other at the cost of never meeting anyone myself last night. Having my own place, its now a different ballgame when meeting girls. Its easy meeting girls; however, its really hard to set things in motion so that you'll both sleep together...

Three days of partying are over. I'm going home today for two days. I get to see my Cleo (my cat), barbeque steaks, watch TMN (The Movie Network) and do laundry.
Erin, a guest of a fellow resident was a fellow partier for the last three days. After Dance Cave, she photocopied her ASS @ a 24 HR Kinko's and made copies (a souvenir) for us fellow partiers!
She signed mine "Laissez les bon temps roulez"!!. In English, it means let the good times roll!
May 26, 2004:
Maybe this is my week of getting FREE STUFF!
Here's my tally so far this week:
- A bottle of Grolsch (beer) that a stranger gave me at Dance Cave.
- A cigarette lighter that a big Russian (behind the counter) gave to me for free because he had no matches when I bought my pack.
- Some Lifestyles latex I picked up (from a "take some" basket) on my way out of the University Health Center after an appointment.
- A free admission + 2 free attractions ticket for the CN Tower given to me from a floormate who works there.
May 30, 2004:
Its a Saturday night and I didn't go out because I just wanted to relax and recover (from the partying last night). Floormates, guests and I started drinking and smoking in the common room at around 9PM, by 11PM the drinkfest spilled out into the hall. Poor souls; the ones trying to sleep. I hope nobody was inconvenienced by the all the LAUGHTER, loud talking, TV and music. After all, our motley crew are floormates from hell. Yet, I am absolved of any responsibility because it wasn't me who got the ball rolling or invited outside guests to the mini-party.
By the time our party of around 20 souls made it to Dance Cave, many of us were already drunk. I went back (with other floormates) to the residence at around 2AM and slept (with hangover symptoms) until 3PM. I would have liked to try and "pick up" but was alredy stumbling and close to being out if it when I got to the Cave.
For a residence that claims drinking is only allowed in student rooms, there seems to be lots of drinking in the hall and common room. Security even came by and hung out with floormates who were drinking in the Common Room at 4AM. Security said it was cool as long as no one is breaking anything. This isn't such a bad place to be!
There's a girl (Mari-Ann) on another floor who's really friendly with me... That's cool, but I'm not into her. I was mentioning to floor mates, that there's only one hot girl on our floor. Its like we have bad karma and ended up with the not so hot girls on our floor. There are hot girls, I see them at breakfast, but they don't live on my floor.
I befriended a cool girl in my lit class. Shannon's always looking out of the corner of her eye at me or turning around (I sit behind her) and making conversation with me. I vowed (to myself) that I'd give her my phone number or ask her if she wants to do something, but was too shy! I had the chance back on Thursday when I walked her to her transit stop after class. |
