Nope, because adventure games ain't like that either. I can name off more than 3-5 good adventure games. Hell, I could do that for most COMPANIES, let alone the genre. (Sierra, for example: SQ 1,3,5, maybe 4; Both Manhunters, Codename: Iceman, Conquest of Camelot, Gold Rush, Gobliiins, LSL1, possibly 3... and that's just off the top of my head)
The problem is that you (and most others) will almost certainly NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM, because it's a largely dead genre. Mention Manhunter: New York, for example, and you usually get blank stares. That also militates against this "higher suck to good ratio"... there are a metric assload of crappy FPSes and RTSes out there, and those genres are still relatively young.
(The number of shit RPGs, for one thing, outwits the ability of the human mind to consider)
I remember shooting the shit with one of my elementary school's janitors during lunch back in '91, he described Manhunter as the most impossible fucking thing (without a guide) he's played. I took his word for it (insert "That's why he's just a janitor!" joke)
So, all the good adventure games were released 8+ years ago? There have been how many good ones in the past five years? 2? Even the "shit RPG" genre is more prolific with quality. There's a reason it's a dead genre.
As for Monkey Island... I liked them, and a lot of other people did too. The insult duels were interesting in how they forced you to rethink how to use the response, because the "main duel" involved different opening taunts. Plus, they did a great job of fucking with the SCUMM system- witness the bits in MI1 that made fun of a) the simplicity of the interface and b) the fact that you could never, ever die in practically all SCUMM game.
If it were just the main duel with all insults available immediately, then yeah I would have thought it was an interesting segment. But trudging through what were essentially console RPGish random encounters and INTENTIONALLY LOSING them just so you could "unlock" more taunts and retorts was the most tedious fucking part of the game, especially during the last two installments which couldn't use the "it's an old game, this was GREAT back then!" excuse since they were released post '95 by which time we shouldn't have to put up with shit like this anymore in games. But more to the point, Space Quest came before Monkey Island, so as I started dozing off somewhere around the 15th insult duel I started thinking "I have Space Quest, why am I bothering with this?". |
