On the other hand, I, sir, resent your attempt to paint those who like adventure games as equivalent to those that like System Shock 2, as that would be to question the quality of both The Longest Journey and the Monkey Island series. Which, of course, must not be done, as they R00LED and such.
The Longest Journey and Monkey Island might be the Lex Lugar's Torture Rack that has everyone cheering in anticipation of a victory, but the King's Quest series is both Arn Anderson hitting him in the back of a knee with a chair while the ref has his head turned AND Ric Flair following that up with the Figure-Four leglock to silence the crowd. So on the whole, adventure games will always suck.
I have no idea what you're on about. And I'm very proud of that.
Adventure games are like people- suck in groups, but individuals are good. If you say "all adventure games suck" or even "all Sierra adventure games suck", then you run into the problem of dismissing Quest for Glory and Manhunter, which would be fucking stupid. (Also, arguably, Codename: Iceman, most of the Space Quest games and the "Conquest" games.)
I mean, fuck, if you go by the quality of the majority of the genre both FPSes and RTSes are unmitigated worthless shit. And that's all we've got nowadays, outside of a few crappy RPGs and the massive multi treadmills.
I never saw what the huge appeal of Monkey Island was. Those painfully tedious (and not to mention 100% thinking free) insult duels that were IN EACH FUCKING GAME had you wandering around until the correct insult decided to randomly show itself were pure pain. The humor was also not even one-fifth as funny as your average Space Quest game (actually, only the odd numbered games in that series were good). Hell, I always thought the comic relief in Quest for Glory was funnier than anything I ever saw in a Monkey Island game (didn't the last one, released 2-3 years ago, have an OJ joke in it? HURR). I think Murray the skull was the only thing that came close to funny in the series.
Adventure games have a far higher suck to good ratio than any other genre I can think of. Can you think of any other genre that only has 3-5 good games?
RTS only has one good game: Sacrifice.
(and a bunch of really fun-looking ones that came out recently that won't play on my brokeass old PC).
The first 2 warcrafts were fun when they came out.
The original C&C was a work of art.
C&C: Generals is very good
Starcraft is a diverse, unit-balancing masterpiece.
Myth was great.
A lot of people are into the AoE games.
Z was fun and refreshing when it came out.
Sacrifice's single player campaign was brilliant, the multiplayer was nothing great as games tended to be one minute neutral soul dashes followed by a 1-2 minute skirmish with the other player, and whoever got a slight upper hand on that had the game in the bag, the other person might as well quit then because there's no way you could make a comeback in that game.
You are wrong. Get a new PC.
That was meant as a joke. Though, now that you mention it: I thought every Warcraft sucked, always. Basically, if I have to tell a unit to harvest anything (wood, gold, whatever) then that game can eat a dick. I end up feeling like Virtua Burger King Shift Supervisor. And don't get me started on the vocalizations of the units, which were bad enough before my dipshit roommate started using them as personal affectations in his speech. Warcraft 1 and 2 were both terrible enough that I assumed that any Blizzard release would be equally bad and have thusly stayed away from them all.
AoE sucked, too. I was very stoked about it when I got it ("hey - Civilization meets RTS!") and then I found out that it's just Warcraft with Civ skins. Awful. The only game I stopped playing sooner than that one was Majesty... less than 48 hours, certainly. (Note: I played Black & White and Railroad Tycoon for a week apiece at least before giving up on them).
Never heard of Z or Myth, and I've never played C&C - the Amazon reviews are very positive, though, maybe I'll check out the original. From what I've heard, installing Generals will make my PC burst into flame and start bleeding glittery computer blood onto my lap.
Multiplayer is not high on my list of priorities. The last multiplayer game I played was Doom, in high school. So actually, I thought I was kidding, but now it looks like maybe I was serious after all.
