I have no idea what you're on about. And I'm very proud of that.
You should be. That's the last time I'll let last night's ICQ conversations about classic wrestling matches seep into my video game commentary, because what the fuck.
Adventure games are like people- suck in groups, but individuals are good. If you say "all adventure games suck" or even "all Sierra adventure games suck", then you run into the problem of dismissing Quest for Glory and Manhunter, which would be fucking stupid. (Also, arguably, Codename: Iceman, most of the Space Quest games and the "Conquest" games.)
I mean, fuck, if you go by the quality of the majority of the genre both FPSes and RTSes are unmitigated worthless shit. And that's all we've got nowadays, outside of a few crappy RPGs and the massive multi treadmills.
I agree with that sentiment, and even about the genre itself. (I was exaggerating for effect - I still think the genre is hit-or-miss, but noticably more miss than hit.) (Also, Codename:Iceman was SO FUCKING STUPID and I couldn't get past the first submarine, therefore I'm going to ignore your listing it along side the likes of Space Quest, QFG or Manhunter.)
But most of that exaggeration is borne out of my intense hatred for adventure game FANS. They'll willingly ignore all the stupid shit that infests most if not all of these games, and their first argument - EVERY... FUCKING... TIME... - whenever confronted with a negative comment about their hobby is "GO BACK TO QUAKE YOU MINDLESS DRONE" or something to that effect. There is not a more screechy subset of gamers in existence. (I guess I'll make an exception for those named Damocles because against all odds, you've avoided resorting to the Quake/mindless-fool argument - have you forgotten your meds?) I know I should just reply with "yeah, I think I will play some Quake, and hey, good luck figuring out how to climb that spiral staircase for the 5,000th time, eh? Never has reloading saved games time and time again been so fun!", but my natural inclination is to screech even more loudly, so I do.
There are people who'll DEFEND this:
http://www.caltrops.com/pointy.php?action=viewPost&pid=14618
for fuck's sake. They're pathologically self-delusional. Sadly, they're also the most vocal adventure game fans out there. You'll have to either forgive or ignore us if we have developed overreaction as a reflex. |
