I think you really miss a lot of the sound elements if you have other people around. Also, Vampyr directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer is one of the few silent-talkie transition films that really mastered the fucked up shit that was possible in that interim region. Watch it one night, pref in dvd, pref. somewhat sleep deprived, since it is one of those films that is more like a nightmare than a horror flick.
