If I had to guess, (and that's all this is -- a guess), I would say that you actually use peripheral vision quite a bit in games. While you are generally focused on one point of the screen, movement in your peripheral vision quickly draws your attention. (Assuming you don't suck.) An obvious example of this would be Counter Strike.


That's exactly how it works for me. While playing quake, I can track several incoming rockets in my peripheral vision simultaneously without focusing on any of them. If my controls/video card/ping is decent, I can be accurately firing on a target in my peripheral vision almost instantaneously. Shockingly, this ability also manifests itself in the real word. I was at a bar, for instance, sitting next to a particularly spastic friend who decided to push me at random. In a semi-drunk state, I managed to catch his arm moving out of the corner of my eye, hook his wrist, and swat his arm away before he was able to knock me off my seat. I'd assume these sorts of fast reactions would be honed by the corresponding scenarios in video games.
