You make a good point regarding military operations. But I've never been anywhere near a combat situation, so I can't speak as to whether or not the awareness you evidently pick up playing shooters even compares in the slightest to spending a single night in the jungle next to Charlie.

My brother just made marksman in the army. As of three weeks ago, he had never so much as touched a modern firearm. My theory was that it was his kung-fu training. My girlfried suspected the video games. It would seem that my girlfriend was right. Which isn't surprising I guess.

Gather round kids and I'll tell you story.

When I first joined the Army ('93) most of the gunners and TC's were the older folk - people born before 1970. But after a year or so, the Army starting forcing a lot of these guys out as part of the big drawdwon in the mid-nineties. Mostly the people who hadn't been promoted in quite a few years - the older gunners and TC's. This opened up slots for me and and the guys who grew up with video games to become gunners.

Now tankers do live fire gunnery every 6 months or so. It's basically a big contest and they score you based on how fast you can spot and take out various targets on the offense, defense, in NBC gear etc, etc... as well as how well you run the tanks. It's important for the commanders to have units that score well, and it's basically bragging rights for all the tankers. For the old timers it was very stressfull, and very difficult. But the tanks with the gamer gunners routinely and easily out shot the old timers. In fact, our 3rd platoon won the award for the best scoring tank platoon in the army in '94. Their gunners were in my room playing Doom and Mechwarrior II (was that out in '94?) quite a bit.

They had to redo all the gunnery standards in 2000. People were scoring too high.

The one thing that I noticede recently was that sniping in counter-strike really helped me with my nighttime (thermal) target ID. Scanning back and forth watching for one tiny pixel change in the landscape works well in both occasions.

Also, Marksman is the lowest level of qualification there is in the Army. That means he barely qualified. I shot Sharpshooter (next level up) my first try with the pistol after having my first time ever shooting a pistol earlier that day. If anything, I would guess that kung-fu would help more with small arms than video games on the range (body control and breathing and all that based on what little I know of kung-fu).
