Empire Earth pissed me off, fuck those guys.

Think Age of Empires: Same shit done better.

Big Huge Games added Civ and Risk like elements so it's more expansive. they also used the Age of Mythology engine (I think) so its pretty. Tech tree and resource managment is un-gay, balanced between mindless and micro managment. It has matured well and polished pretty slick. Bonus: No overdramatized history lesson story lines. The AI is solid, pathfinding is the best i've seen yet, though if you send large armies into tight places or massive armies on a single target the usual clusterfuck will happen. Keep your artillery separated from your infantry and armor instead of massing them into one army, then pacing an assault remedies it pretty well.
