For example: it's well-documented that Xenosaga (and to a much greater extent, Xenogears) heave around religious symbology and terminology without any bearing to their original significance. Hearing Albedo shout "I am the Alpha and Omega of all consciousness!" is just utterly silly. However, I can easily shrug it off as a sort of placeholder culture.
I'll just say one thing (for real) about the religious reference crap in Xenowhatever:
I'd probably think it was really cool and edgy and original and creative if I was 13. I'm older now, and it has the exact opposite effect.
That goes double for the thing he said about pop music: Dude - just because pop music is everywhere and sells millions of copies doesn't make it enjoyable. It just means that these singers have awesome bodies and are really sexy, and that makes little girls want to buy their records. Once you are old enough to drive, you have to start paying attention to where your buying dollar goes.
I had a friend/colleague/now-bitter-enemy that said that he never wants to listen to any artist that isn't the best of its genre. He doesn't listen to Elvis Costello's This Year's Model because My Aim Is True is out there and "life is too short to listen to garbage". He basically ended up only listening to The Beatles and Wings (which I don't understand). That seems to prove Jason's point - that's taking being selective to a ridiculous extreme. But in a lot of ways my f/c/n-b-e was right: I only have maybe $100/year to spend on video games, and maybe 2 hours a week that I can sit and play them. #1: I'm obviously never going to sit and watch a damn 30 minute cutscene, no way no fucking how. #2: If anything is a "placeholder," then that game is out. Why are they wasting my precious time with their placeholders? Take that bullshit out! If they're trying to "say something" but actually they're saying nothing, then they should shut up and let me fly my goddamn spaceship and shoot my gun! |
