JUST SKIPPING THROUGH RANDOMLY TO QUOTES
Jason Love wrote:
Well, if they find enjoyment in picking it apart like that, then more power to them. And to you, for that matter. (In an ideal world, though, Xenosaga wouldn't suck. Or it wouldn't exist. Whatever.) Personally, I don't think such a cynical attitude really makes you enjoy games more, and that's basically what I'm trying to get across. You wanted feedback? Here it is.
Actually I have enjoyed games before. I'm almost finished with Mafia, which is indeed an extensive game, not without faults. Perhaps its biggest fault is that it was made by people from the same planet as the people who made Xenosaga. On the upside: the characters in Mafia don't spend 40 straight hours whining about how war is bad and how their glass of water is empty.
And I am arguing, conversely, that it's your attitude that's poisonous.
That's probably because I played Xenosaga. Case: CLOSED.
I guess it's important to give credit where it is due. And as far as being "politely unhappy" is concerned--you can't please everyone. That's a given, right? Well, I'm just making it known where the unpleased portion of the audience lies, and hopefully expressing some reasonable complaints. Isn't that the point of feedback?
Yes, I've noticed, after the few years of not totally loving everything about the original Xenogears, that some people would indeed express complaints when you failed to agree with them regarding Xenogears being the greatest video game made. Most rational people, after that, would just give up liking Xenogears period and find something better to do with their time. Hint hint.
My point was rather that the frequent moralizing and philosophizing in the game didn't seem to me to be a specific commentary on wartime relations between Japan and the United States which your review seemed to suggest they were.
Japanese game sez: war is bad. Japan, famous for getting one of the most humiliating asskickings in the history of humanity. I took it upon myself to draw any conclusion I could want from that.
Are blanket statements and rampant generalizations a problem on the Internet? Many people seem to think so. Do more blanket statements coupled with sarcasm do anything to stop them? I don't really think so.
That sure is a big gosh darn golly shame. :(
Kind of like what a shame it is that Xenosaga fans are all gayfags.
Well, on this I'll agree with you. Fanatical behavior in support of a game or series DOES strike me as ridiculous. In fact, I feel exactly the same way about fanatical behavior in opposition of a game or series.
There's a psychological epidemic that even an armchair Ultra Fag like me can notice from sitting around on my ass reading things over the internet: there is an extremely powerful and bewilderingly pointless trend in deifying any shitty ass shit that comes from Japan, these days. Therefore, yeah, the fanatical behavior could seem ridiculous. And any backlash to it is well deserved. Not that my Xenosaga review is really about that lofty sort of idea (lofty, like perhaps a really high bunk bed). But I'm just saying, my actions are (objectively) justified no matter what.
Of course I don't want to imply that it doesn't matter if Xenosaga is good or not if I would be justified in trashing it because it's being overrated beyond all rational reasoning. If it was good, or not painful, or not a mistake, I'd give it its fair chance. Yes, even though it is from the highly overrated and trendy-name-drop country of Something.
Thanks for the clarification. I hardly think FFX was the first game to have a successful saving system, but that is one thing they share in common. And while I disagree with your assessment of the battle system, I much prefer your presentation of it--if your entire review had consisted of straightforward opinions like this one, I would not have been prompted to complain.
Okay, this isn't my fault. It is yours.
In truth, the whole panties thing never really occurred to me. It did seem a bit odd that all the females are wearing skirts, but I chalked that up to the quirks of the character designer. Pandering has become so common in games lately that it no longer seems particularly odd.
Well I guess it's just me to think that a 12 year old girl falling ass-over-applecart with her legs spread, feet in the air, every 10 minutes could be even considered odd by today's savvy role playing game player! |
