I just want to add here that I'm sitting here listening to Frank Black's first two solo albums after the breakup (self-titled and "Teenager of the Year") and LOVING IT. Personally I can still listen to these two albums over and over whereas a lot of Pixies stuff sounds pretty dated. Maybe it's just old age that's making all his Catholics so listless?
I agree that both of those albums are really really great. There were a lot of things that changed after Teenager Of The Year that could explain why everything that came after sucked so much in comparison: loss of uber-collaborator Eric Drew Feldman, the philosophical move from meticulous Pro Tools records to live-to-4-track records, old age, marriage(?), whatever. They all boil down to the fact that he kind of stopped trying, creative burnout I guess. Much like Pinkerton, Teenager was not well-admired at the time, and maybe having his big sprawling epic dismissed knocked all the wind out of Charles Thompson, too. Thompson had the extra kick in the teeth that his ex-bandmate had a very successful record out at the same time (the also-amazing Last Splash).
With all this speculation about wha-happened, I feel like we're being a little unfair to these guys. Isn't it okay to burn out creatively after putting out 7 amazing albums? (Okay, 5 amazing albums and 2 good ones?) How many records did Bob Dylan put out before Self-Portrait? How many Elvis Costello records were there before Goodbye Cruel World? |
