This is the theory that Rivers tells as fact, and as such, I don't believe it, since he's a filthy liar. I don't believe Rivers' shy nerd persona at all, I believe he's actually just a prick, and I don't believe that he's so torn up inside by the reaction to Pinkerton he can't return to that space ARTISTICALLY.

Rivers' runs Weezer like a business, even becoming the band's manager and publicist, so I would support the concept that he sees Pinkerton as a finiancial failure which shouldn't be revisited. I'm sure green/Maladroit-era Weezer was making money hand over fist, so it's constant reinforcement to stay the course. Trying to recapture the older angst is risky and doesn't make good business sense.

You also warmed me up to the Matt Sharp theory a bit.
