Weezer's Make Believe SUCKS by Fussbett 04/26/2005, 6:20pm PDT Weezer was my favourite band at a point in the mid 90's when they put out the flawless self-titled debut, followed by the criminally underappreciated and awesome Pinkerton, Rolling Stone magazine's pick for WORST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. They disappeared for 4 years, and resurfaced for a tour. Seeing this comeback show, I proclaimed that the new Weezer album would be fantastic because it was one of the top three concerts I've ever seen (as documented in a post that SB deleted), and I loved every new song they played; scorching renditions of Mad Cow, Slob, and Superstar. Songs that inexplicably did not appear on the disasterously calm and sterile "green" album, released in 2001. I tried hard to like it, but ultimately boredom won. Each new Weezer album comes out and I foolishly get interested. A gimmick video (Sumo/bosozoku, Muppets, Playboy mansion) and I wonder if maybe this next album will be a return to the glorious worst album of the year that was Pinkerton. Make Believe leads off with the video single, a good goofy track called "Beverly Hills", and then it's a Green/Maladroit freefall of mild midtempo interchangable songs. Looking for more adjectives to describe why recent Weezer fails and old Weezer succeeds, I started to listen to some Pinkerton tracks. But then half an hour went by in no time and I had listened to the whole thing. Man they used to be great.
