Narration. When your game is mostly this, it is all about convincing you that the game's better than what its gameplay earns it credit for, in the same way that a sitcom or TV drama with a lot of voice-over narration convinces you that the characters are more watchable/interesting than they really are. Law and Order doesn't require narration but Grey's Anatomy does, because nobody ever says 'here's why I saved that kid from Ed Gein.'
Games built around narration are like TV characters the viewer experiences through VO and theater productions full of melodramatic music to cue reactions. Many if not most ring hollow, though once in a while you get The Shawshank Redemption. This is all Robert McKee and some film bloggers so there's my appeal to authority. |
