- Early Access has burned everyone out on funding unfinished games.
Ha, I kind of think that indie game sites need to either cover games that aren't finished OR are 100% done. There was a stretch where it seemed that every game I was reading about was simply "announced" or in development. Never finished and purchasable. I mean, every game is the best game ever if you're talking about screenshots and concept art and features. It isn't until you start playing and see that the thing won't let you remap controls or that it's got more tearing than bicyclists through four-way stops (TOPICAL) (Sorry).
- There's too many of them. Even weeding out obviously broken games, there's too many games that are 6-7/10 coming out. Even really good games have the "but flawed" caveat.
I'd guess, with no science whatsoever, that the fourth hour of an indie game is probably played by 1% of the people who buy the game. There are a ton of them and I wish they were shorter. A lot of flaws come from how dragged-out they are.
- There's something to be said for PR. Phil Fish and some of the Kickstarter updates have shown that some designers don't even know how to interact with other human beings on a basic level, let alone as a company to a customer.
Back in the 90s, one of the members of the iD team was the "biz" guy and I think that if you're going to have an indie team made up of separate people it should be programmer, musician, graphic artist, writer, public relations. But PR is just as big as any of the others, in terms of getting the game noticed and spoken about. I guess what I am saying is that it's always been that way, I just didn't respect PR until recently.
- Humble Bundle and the app store have devalued these games. There's now so many for so cheap, it's hard to keep up with the news coverage.
What bugs me is that there's no decent way to evaluate the games when I get an e-mail about them weekly. The number of games doesn't matter. The price for all of them will always be between 2 and 6 bucks. I'd kind of like to have, in an e-mail, the name of the game, a representative screenshot, the genre and notes if the developer has done other games. Instead, Indie Royale gives you this one image, divided up into six slices that tell you nothing except the title.
(Apologies for the random comments that don't go anywhere or really have anything to do with anything. I will change the title to reflect this.)
