Who are they talking about? Sony has made a commitment to funding indies and XBOX has the XBLA. Let's take it at face value though that there's a growing audience segment who doesn't want to play or hear about indie games. Why would that be?
- Early Access has burned everyone out on funding unfinished games.
- Kickstarter/IndieGoGo has burned everyone out on funding potential games. Plus many of the ones coming out are okay but nothing special.
- There's too many of them. Even weeding out obviously broken games, there's too many games that are 6-7/10 coming out. Even really good games have the "but flawed" caveat.
- Sites championing indie games have been hyping up every new game that gets sent their way.
- There's only so many pixelated/retro games you can take. Yes, 3D or nice 2D art is expensive. No, it's not my problem if you can't afford it.
- Many of them are basically platformers or 2D sidescrollers with one or two gimmicks that aren't radical enough to distinguish them from the others or to make them good. for all of IGN's talk about how daring they are, most are incredibly derivative.
- There's something to be said for PR. Phil Fish and some of the Kickstarter updates have shown that some designers don't even know how to interact with other human beings on a basic level, let alone as a company to a customer.
- The indie scene has an obsession with narration over gameplay right now and everyone sort of wishes it would end. Even people who like Dear Esther probably don't want more than a handful of these games each year.
- People might not consider indie games published by big houses to be indie anymore. Some of the best games made by independent developers are being published by big companies. Journey and Unfinished Swan were published by Sony. Shank and Shank 2 were published by EA. Valiant Hearts and Child of Light were published by Ubisoft. These are the new B-tier games.
- Humble Bundle and the app store have devalued these games. There's now so many for so cheap, it's hard to keep up with the news coverage.
- Yes, AAA games are $60, but you're paying 4-6x the price of an indie game for 10x the graphics/sound and likely at least triple the run time. It's not as bad a value as IGN makes it seem.
- This hatred is extrapolated from reading IGN comments. They're on IGN so are really here to answer polls on their favorite Marvel character or argue about who deserves to be #1 on the list of hottest babes in the Pokemon universe. They don't care about indie games because the site barely talks about games. |
