Sites championing indie games have been hyping up every new game that gets sent their way.
Here's the first blurb for the Rock Paper Shotgun's cheap-ass game roundup from today.
Papers, Please
$4.99/£3.49/€4.49
Buy Papers, Please, please. If you haven’t already, although I can’t imagine why you would have skipped out on at least owning it. There’s a reason as to why Lucas Pope’s magnum opus has collated so many awards over the past few months. It is excellent in that soul-searing way that so many critics have demanded video games to be. Just make sure to have plenty of comfort food ready.
Having viewed a Let's Play of Papers, Please, it looks like the most boring game in the world. It's also been out for a year. And THIS is what RPS chose to lead with. (I'm ignoring the fact that the author simply states that it won a bunch of awards without stating what on Earth is interesting or fun about it.)
This is like starting your independent game article about a sale for Braid.
It makes it impossible to take any of the hype seriously for any other independent games. I'm glad the guy made a shit ton of money from it. He knew exactly how to appeal to people like RPS.
