I'd start with 7. If you were to go back, I'd say really go back and play the very first one, Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

Anyway I liked 7 at the time, not sure how well it holds up today really. You can roll your own characters, and might spend a good hour clicking and reclicking and reclicking the reroll button, trying to get good stats if you want a powerful class like a Ninja at the start. I almost think they expected this? It doesn't matter really because as you play you should change classes with your characters often, the fun of the Wizardry system. You could have a warrior who leveled up some, can become a samurai, and a mage do the same thing. You'd have two equal level samurais, but one can fight well while the other remembers a bunch of spells from his mage days. Anyway I mentioned the ninja because I remember they come into the story so was nice to have one in my party.

What made Wizardry 7 special amoungst RPGs was there were a few other parties in the world doing things along with you. They travel around like you do, and you will encounter them where you can parlay/fight. They're led by unique NPCs and will roam around and collect pieces of the same riddle you're trying to collect. I think people hated this, but sort of enjoyed that aspect to the game and wished others had built on the idea, but nobody ever did. It was kind of cool, actually. A piece was locked in some chest I couldn't get open for whatever reason, and another group came later and got the piece. So I killed 'em for it.

It starts with a sexy girl riding a rocket.

That's about all I remember.
