Have you considered putting up a web page where the PHP code, if authenticated, presents whatever selections you want to make, then issues a system call on the properly filtered arguments to set things on the machine where it's running? I mean, Linux machines generally already have Apache with PHP already installed and usually activated. All you'd have to do is write the interface for whatever you wanted to do, and have it issue the system call to do it. If it also has to listen on a non-standard port number for the request it probably won't even be noticed.
