It is traditional to put the fully qualified domain name in the /etc/hosts file when using a static IP address. This means that you never have to contact the DNS server to map your own hostname to your own IP address. When you have a dynamic IP address, it doesn't really make sense to put the hostname in the /etc/hosts file at all. People do it anyway, usually mapping the hostname to 127.0.0.1, which is one of the loopback addresses.
This is all different from setting the hostname, which is traditionally in /etc/HOSTNAME. Theoretically, the FQDN does not have to include the hostname at all. The internet could know me as "kumquuat" and I could call myself "kiwi." This happens a lot, in fact: you may name your computer leetHaxxxor, but Verizon probably calls you shithead-1034534536.at.verizon.whatever.the.fuck.com.
You can have any number of domain names mapping to the same IP, of course. So it doesn't really even make sense to say that your computer has an FQDN. It has zero or more FQDNs. And of course you can have as many IP addresses as you want as well. The average programmer is ignorant of this and floods StackOverflow with questions like "how can get I get IP address of machine from Java kthx" |
