I saved a copy of the BBS and would love to put that up some place. Using DOSbox, would a linode machine allow people to telnet in?
Yes it will. In fact you should probably look into stopping a lot of them. You have a machine. On the Internet. Go. I would recommend step one be set up some form of firewalling. Luckily, out of band console access makes blowing up your networking painless.
I can't use my home computer because I drop my internet connection constantly and get a new IP all the time. Services like DynDNS are made for this. Register a domain, pay the nice man, run their client. Whenever your IP changes the client tells DynDNS to update your DNS records, which should have low enough TTLs to expire quickly enough.
And if I wanted one of these VMs to access a directory on my home computer, so it could let me access music from anywhere, could that work too? Yup. All you need to do is set up the proper services on the Linode side and then connect to it. Again, some form of firewalling would probably be a good idea here too.
You know how harried those sysadmins at work always seem to be? This lets you join in their fun! [disclaimer: as one of those sysadmins, no guarantee of fun is expressed or implied.] |
