As a new customer you probably won't care one way or the other very much.

AWS is always going to be the standard and will probably never go away

Linode is a boutique company full of passionate geeks who built some very impressive things five years ago that everyone now takes for granted.

I've been giving my money to Linode for something like 5 years, so I'm biased. Back then when I was getting booted from my work's DC there were much fewer options. In Linode's favor I'll note my average yearly outages have been about once per lasting 5-10 minutes. For AWS, it's harder to gauge, since it depends on if the specific DC you're in has problems, or if your HW fails. In AWS' favor, if there is a HW issue they will email you as soon as possible to let you schedule a migration for your instance.
