Undertakers have a bad rap because they take advantage of the bereaved when they're weak and vulnerable. Selling expensive funerals and options people don't need. You can bury someone in a wood box that you can probably have made from four pieces of plywood and steel handles for maybe $100, what do you need to spend over a thousand dollars on a casket. Also, embalming is usually not required to bury someone, that's a few hundred more.
But these type realizations are cold and logical; the bereaved are in terrible sadness and not up to it. In fact, the cheapest way to die is to prepay for a funeral, however most people won't do it because it reminds them of their mortality.
Besides, a family who has a dead person is a one-time customer, he ain't doing repeat business with the mortuary.
Plus, let's not forget that undertakers are always the most powerful people in town, because they know where the bodies are buried. |
