With random encounters turned off, I'm actually thinking the Hivers are the easiest race to play. No constantly fretting about engine techs and ferrying tanker escorts. Their speed disadvantage only really applies to the first neighboring stars. After setting up the first gates they're pretty much even with other races in expanding, and travel is instantaneous without worrying about fuel levels ever again. The bonuses to combat and terraforming are just gravy.
The game fights you every step of the way in trying to glean effective strategies. Do I want armor or shields? Drones or missiles? What exactly does 300 more armor points get me? There are no hard numbers, only vague graphs for weapons and defenses don't even give you that. Technologies having totally unrelated, secret prerequisites that you only find out after the fact (or memorizing a guide).
Combat desperately needs an indicator of effective weapon range. The most baffling design decision of the game was to make the strategic map a confusing true 3D for absolutely no reason, followed by making the battles (where 3 dimensions would actually add something) take place on a flat 2D plane where it's possible for friendly ships to collide in the infinite depths of space.
Here's me designing the perfect 4X game: combine the 90% of everything MOO1 still does best to this day (mostly in strategic simplicity) with the 10% of MOO2 that improved on that (better early to mid game battles, expanded diplomacy). |

Essentially, SOTS is RISK, so it was a mistake adding all that shit anyway. by Mischief Maker 03/25/2012, 3:39pm PDT
