This thread inspired me to play a quick game of SOTS last night that ended somewhere around 5am. The highlight of the game was right after I built my first Dreadnought, a Blazer type covered with beams and point defense I named "The Sword of Justice!" I sent it out to a new colony right on the enemy's doorstep that only had light missile satellites for defense. No sooner had my Dreadnought arrived when an armada of 76 enemy ships pounced on the planet with no time to call reinforcements. My one advantage was the enemy didn't have dreadnought tech yet.
That battle was incredible! My huge custom-built dreadnought swarmed by destroyers, popping them left and right with its turreted beams and angling itself for its spinal mount heavy beams to cut the enemy cruisers in half, all the while my rapid-fire laser point defense turrets getting overwhelmed by all the missiles the destroyers managed to pop off before getting fried. Too bad I didn't have any drone (fighter) satellites, or it would have been something straight out of Freespace 2. In the end, The Sword of Justice was covered in scorches, venting plasma from every angle, but victorious.
It was one of those little "moments" that make this videogame hobby worth it. THAT's what makes putting up with SOTS' bizarre design decisions worth it.
Can Armada 2526 give me that? |
