I liked most of PE but hated running. Since I went to most of K-12 in a PE All The Time state (Illinois), I had to do a lot of running, which I hated. I once got a round of applause for running a mile in under 12 minutes. 12!
My favorite PE shit was: archery, hands down. Not that I was good at it, just that I liked it. Then the brief weightlifting segments - from about 11-13 these were paradise, since I was still brutally stronger than any boy and would arbitrarily humiliate them and frighten the instructor (I was always the least favorite student of any male gym teacher, worse than Not-Trying Fatty or Retard Fatty.) After they started pubescing I was stuck with leg mastery alone. Then: square dancing, since everyone hated it equally, so we could all laugh about hating it together while boys were forced to hold my hand. Excellent.
Anyway I found tag the most humilating because I hated running and was never fast enough to catch anyone - worse, I would blow all my energy racing around right at the start, get tagged three minutes in, and be too fat and huffy and panting to even shuffle meaningfully towards other children, even other fatties. I would hand Child Me her ass in tag - an exciting thought, maybe when I'm 30 years older I'll be able to hand Now Me her ass all over again!
I don't know that this safe PE initiative is as completely half-assed as we would like to think it is. Primarily because whiny bitchy parents are always clawing at teachers to make school safer and easier for their loser children, so, like with textbooks, we're just looking at market forces and government inertia working together to make the noisiest part of a population less noisy.
Ideally rigorous PE would go hand in hand with rigorous academics in K-12 schools, but hey maybe neither works too. |
