Except that's exactly how it is and exactly what you're supposed to do despite that.
Best slum kid story:
There was a wealthy district a few blocks from where we were living in Delhi that had $1 Subway 6-inch subs. I walked there with the Gypsy to get some for my breakfast lunch and tea. We stopped at a coffee shop. The Delhi slum children would wait for you to make eye contact before approaching so that you felt as if you instigated their approach, not like the raggedy-ass Mumbai slum kids with their cold-call approaches that you easily brush off with your ice cold heart.
While I was looking about I accidentally looked at ~5 y/o girl for a couple of seconds, so she took the opportunity to come over and ask for money. Fat chance, bitch! My heart is cold as ice and there was fence around the coffee shop that kept her from touching me. If she entered the shop, the owner would kick her ass. You can't do shit to me!
After a while, an older girl of about 8-10 joined her and also asked us for money like we didn't hear the younger girl the first time. We ignored her. So the older girl pulls out a pin, puts her hand over the fence, and starts pushing the pin through the skin on her palm right in our fucking faces. Holy fuck! Now that she's got our attention, she asks for money again. We were telling her to fuck off and saying that her shit was outragous. But we didn't leave I gues because they had totally engaged us now? Also that would be letting them win and we'd just ordered coffee. The older girl hands a... it wasn't even a pin I don't think because it was bent. It was probably wire. And younger girl started trying to figure out how to stab herself with that while the older girl gave her advice. Fucked!
The Gypsy left so I had to follow (sigh!) and the kids trailed us. I was pretty emotional and thinking of ways to resolve this to impress the Gypsy and teach these fucks a lesson and I came up with this idea, so I stopped and said I would give the older girl a couple of rupee if she first gave me her pin. I was miming this out to them. It took a while to communicate but I was pretty psyched because I thought I was making a big statement here and changing the world for the better but the Gypsy kept telling me to leave them and come on. I can't even remember if she stayed close to watch. Once the older girl had handed over her pin, I gave her some money and I think she was about to leave before I made my big statement so I had to keep her attention, and I took the pin and was like, "Here's where this goes! Do you see this! Right in the bin! Right in the trash! Now, don't ever do that again!". And it was outside this movie theatre on the corner of this posh district so maybe I had a bit of crowd?
And then I went back to the younger girl and said, "Where's your pin?" and either she couldn't understand me or she'd lost her pin or just wasn't willing to give it to me because she just stood there with her hands out looking at me. So I was like, "Where's your pin?! Your pin?!" and miming the pin your hands motion, but she wouldn't give me shit, and I can't just give her the money now without the pin. So I look for the older girl to ask her where the little girl's pin is, but she's left and gone over to the bin to fish around for her pin I threw out! And the Gypsy was acting like I was a total fucking retard and telling me to come on. So we walked away but he younger girl came running after us upset that she hadn't got any money, so I gave her a few sticks of gum instead and she left me alone.
Here are some lovely slightly wealthier children, though. It's amazing how much better people are with a little money.
