I finally saw it tonight and I've been thinking about it for the entire 25 minutes since it ended. I haven't liked an Aronofsky movie yet and the streak remains unbroken (though this one I actually sat through because it was in a theater and not a cable box).
Throughout the movie I kept wondering if he was putting us on, whether this was some sort of big joke kind of like American Beauty (it turned out that one wasn't a joke, and I have a nagging suspicion this one isn't, either). From the opening titles to the "20 Years Later" slug to the stripper with a heart of gold to the estranged daughter who missed her dad on EVERY BIRTHDAY to the fucking crowd sounds as The Ram walks out to his new deli job (you didn't think we'd make that connection without the audio cue, Darren?) to the mid-Ram Jam heart attack, it was just one cliche after another. An endless grind of every over the hill sports movie you've ever seen mixed in with working-class romance and paternal bonds repaired movies, without any of the subtlety of even a Rocky movie. A Rocky movie! All that was missing was the equally estranged son now on the rise as The Bull who agrees to a match with the dad he also hasn't seen in whatever years (Robin/Randy/Ram dies in that one while the daughter cries at the back of the high school gym while the stripper stands behind her but turns away from the match). I have a feeling they have all that for the DVD, though. |
